The Latest Food Trends of 2018
Food always trends, every day, every hour every minute. With the advent of technology, we are seeing a spike in food trends around the globe. Globe Trotters, take this opportunity to share their discoveries with the world. Some of these discoveries are tasty while others are just weird, take a look at some of the food trends we have discovered so far:
Juicy Vegetarian Burger:
The idea of a veggie burger is enough to leave you a little skeptical, but a juicy burger idea is quite different. Burgers are usually made from chicken, beef or some other kind of meat from domestic or wild animals. The creation of PETA and other animal cruelty movements has caused a shift in the way animals are treated. Restaurants now include more meals for emerging vegetarian consumers.
Vegetarians and vegans get better and more creative with their meals and combination methods. A veggie burger can consist of black bean ingredients with quinoa, cauliflower with brown rice and several other ingredients. These ingredients are used to maintain the shape of the patty with other ingredients that add more texture and flavor. These delicious burgers are becoming more and more popular around the world for being a healthy, tasty and eco-friendly alternative to non-vegetarians burgers.
Coloured Toast:
The coloured toast is as strange as it sounds, it consists of bread, milk and food coloring. To make edible milk paint, start by pouring a small amount of milk into several bowls then adding small drops of food colouring to each bowl and stiring. Each slice of bread is coloured by dipping a brush in each bowl and “painting” strips or patterns. After the slice is sufficiently coloured, it is toasted and eaten with butter.
Pumpkin Porridge:
Pumpkin porridge, also known as Hobak-juk, is a variety of juk (porridge) made from pumpkin flour and sticky rice as known in Korea. It is a naturally sweet porridge that is traditionally served to recovering patients or the senior citizens. Pumpkins, preferably Korean cheese pumpkins known as cheongdung-hobak in Korean, are washed and diced. It is then peeled, boiled and mashed. The pumpkin puree is then strained to obtain a smoother texture. Then mixed with rice flour, during which red beans or parboiled black beans can be added. Saealsim, small rice cake dumplings made from glutinous rice flour mixed with hot water, are usually served with the porridge. Finally, salt and sugar are added to taste.
Raindrop Cake:
Try to imagine what it will be like to have a raindrop as a cake, seems a little far-fetched, doesn’t it? The raindrop cake is more like a large and fancy looking drop of water with caramelized sugar syrup. Made only from mineral water and agar-agar powder, the dessert is known as mizu shingen mochi in Japan. After heating, the mixture is placed in refrigerated molds and receives no flavor until the caramelized sugar and kinako (roasted soy flour) are poured on top just before serving. The end result looks like a beautiful transparent rain or a drop of dew. It is a food trend that you certainly do not want to miss.
Floral Meals:
Apparently, the flowers are not only beautiful and fragrant, they are also edible. Edible flowers are consumed in many forms, they can be fried, baked, roasted and made with many other methods. Some of these floral meals include the following and more:
